Many hip injuries are preventable. Dr. Patel, what can you tell us about preventing hip injuries?

Dr. Patel
Well, Dr. Jerman, stretching and strengthening exercises can go a long way in preventing hip problems. Exercises for the thighs, lower back, groin, buttocks, and abdominal muscles should be part of your regular exercise routine unless you have a special health problem. Getting regular exercise not only strengthens the muscles that support the hip joint, but it can also slow the kind of bone loss that increases the risk for hip fractures.

Eating a healthy diet and achieving or maintaining a healthy weight can also ease the amount of stress put on your hips. A healthy diet should include plenty of calcium and Vitamin D to promote bone strength. You can also talk to your provider about calcium and Vitamin D supplements, as well as other medications that slow bone loss and increase bone strength.

Most of all, use common sense and listen to your body. Always warm up and stretch before rigorous activity, and don’t overdo it. If you’re in pain, don’t try to push through it. Give your body the rest it needs. Finally, remember to drink plenty of fluids to stay well hydrated.
