Hip Exercises

One key element of recovery from a hip injury or surgery involves regular exercises to restore normal motion and flexibility. The goal is a gradual return to everyday work and recreational activities. Make sure that whatever exercises you do have been approved by your provider or physical therapist. Before doing any hip conditioning exercises, it’s a good idea to warm up with five to 10 minutes of low impact activity, such as walking or riding a stationary bike.

After the warm-up, start with stretching exercises, such as:

  • Standing Iliotibial Band Stretch
  • Seated Rotation Stretch
  • Knee to Chest
  • Supine Hamstring Stretch

Then move on to strengthening exercises:

  • Hip Abduction
  • Hip Adduction
  • Hip Extension
  • Internal Hip Rotation
  • External Hip Rotation
