Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people in the United States seek medical care. Nearly everyone will experience some degree of low back pain before they’re 50 years old.

The majority of low back pain will resolve within six to eight weeks. However, recurrent low back pain, or pain that continues to occur off and on without a cause, can be a sign of weak muscles in the lower back. A physical therapist can assess which muscles are weak and then prescribe exercises targeting those muscles. Back pain that lasts for six weeks or less is called "acute" back pain.

Low back pain that lasts between six and 12 weeks is called “subacute” low back pain, and pain that lasts longer than 12 weeks is considered "chronic." Chronic low back pain is fairly common. For patients who have chronic back pain or a serious injury, specialty care is available. Providers can help direct patients to the appropriate clinicians and refer patients for treatment.
